Around the World in Fifteen Months … With a Family

"In July of 2016, my husband Brandon and I decided to embark on an epic journey…with a baby (Lily was one at the time) and dog (toy Yorkie Baron) in tow. Our itinerary included Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. We visited 26 countries in the span of 15 months.

5 Ways to Budget For Your Next Big Trip

Itching to take a much needed vacation, but not interested in breaking the bank to do it? Planning a getaway can be exciting, but you don’t have to bust your budget to enjoy yourself. To help ease your mind, here are the top 5 tried-and-true tips to make your next destination a success, and budget friendly.

  1. Travel during the off season: One of the top ways to save money is traveling during low peak seasons, creating less stress on the wallet. As an added bonus, you typically maximize the experience with less crowded attractions. Although peak seasons vary by destination, it’s ideal to avoid traveling during the summer, holiday months, or when most tourists are in their winter months looking to warm up. School holidays breaks can increase airfare and accommodations as well. For example, a more affordable Caribbean getaway should be taken in the summer months when it’s also hot in the U.S.

  2. Visit countries where your dollar is strong: Not every vacation needs to be one of luxury. Traveling to places where you get the most bang for your buck will not only help save you money, but it could make for extended stays. Some of our recommended destinations to consider include NICARAGUA, COSTA RICA AND GREECE.

  3. Choose alternate airports: Major airports such as LAX or JFK can be frustrating, intimidating, and time consuming. Going through TSA, baggage claim, and making sure you’re at the correct gate for departure is a task all on its own, and you haven’t even made it to you final stop. Before finalizing flights, double check with regional airports to compare prices, and if flying local makes the most cost-effective sense.

  4. Hostels and B&Bs: Who wouldn’t want to stay in a 5-star hotel? But if you’re really wanting to stretch your dollar, hostels and bed and breakfast properties are the way to go. There’s literally an accommodation type for every budget. The options are endless: from sharing a room for those solo travelers, looking to meet friend along the way, to a couple/family wanting a private space that reminds them of home. Discover some of the world’s best B&Bs and hostels, you probably didn’t know existed.

  5. Pack light: It’s not necessary to bring your entire home with you. If done well, you’ll be surprised at how much you can fit into a carry-on luggage. This will save you those dreaded baggage fees, and what small items you may need can easily be purchased upon arrival. Besides, you’re probably going to come back with more gifts and souvenirs anyway… save that room.

From Parang To Ponding: Basking in the Untraditional

"The absence of tradition at home made room for its abundance to be experienced elsewhere.  Those of us who grow up without deep running family customs feel a freedom that tradition-filled lives don’t always allow – the freedom to unapologetically miss holidays, birthdays and other “special” times of the year, to go off and seek spaces of connection out in the world."
